The Permit and Warning

Crossing the Boundary
Preparation
Bernard secures permission to visit the Reservation, and the Warden describes its electrified fence and isolated population. The destination is presented as a controlled exception.
Contrast anticipated
Lenina expects deficiencies and discomfort. Bernard is drawn to the possibility of seeing lives not organized by London’s assumptions.
The Pueblo Ascent

The Ground Beneath Them
Physical encounter
The visitors climb to the mesa on foot and enter a world of dirt, smoke, animals, and unfamiliar people. Lenina’s trained disgust surfaces immediately.
Reversed perspective
Bernard’s explanations cannot make the pueblo ordinary to her. The journey exposes how thoroughly London has conditioned her sense of cleanliness and normality.
The Snake Dance

A Ritual of Pain
Ceremony
Dancers handle snakes, invoke sacred figures, and witness Palowhtiwa being whipped. The spectacle joins bodily suffering to communal and spiritual meaning.
Divided response
Lenina sobs and longs for soma. John, who wished to take the victim’s place, sees sacrifice as a meaningful obligation.
The Unexpected Guide

John’s Story
Recognition
John approaches the visitors as someone from the Other Place. He explains that Linda came from the World State and remained in Malpais after becoming lost.
Connection
Bernard realizes that Linda’s companion was the Director. The encounter links the Reservation’s private history to an imminent crisis inside London’s institutions.
Return with Linda

The Journey Back
Decision
Bernard obtains orders to bring John and Linda to London. John embraces the prospect he has imagined since childhood; Linda anticipates renewed access to civilization.
Unseen consequences
The return will expose the Director’s past and make John a public curiosity. The pair are brought into a society that can display them but cannot understand them.
